Privacy Policy

Summitt Energy is committed to ensuring that all personal information is managed in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, 2000 c.5 ("PIPEDA"). As such, Summitt Energy's Privacy Policy follows the 10 principles set out in Schedule 1 of the PIPEDA.

 Principles

 Accountability

Summitt Energy has assigned its Director of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs as the company's privacy officer.  This individual is responsible to oversee that the company complies with the privacy principles outlined in the PIPEDA. 

 Summitt Energy has implemented the following tasks.

  1. Implemented procedures to protect personal information
  2. Established procedures to receive and respond to complaints and inquiries
  3. Trained staff about the organization's policies and practices and
  4. Developed information to explain the organization's privacy policies and procedures.

 Identifying Purposes

In its energy contracts and in discussions with customers, employees and vendors, Summitt Energy clearly identifies the purpose of collecting the personal information.  In regards to customer information, the information is collected for the purpose of supplying the customer with the natural gas and/or electricity commodity for the duration of the contract.

Consent

Customers providing Summitt Energy with personal information consent to and have knowledge of how Summitt Energy is collection, using, and disclosing their personal information.  Summitt Energy's energy contract provides details as to the collection and release of the customer's personal information.

 Limiting Collection

The amount and type of the personal information collected by Summitt Energy from its customers is strictly in relation to fulfilling the requirements of the energy contract, between the customer and Summitt Energy, and to maintain the accuracy of our business records.

 Limiting Use, Disclosure and Retention

The main purpose for the disclosure of customer information is for the energy commodity supply as specified on the contract and if requested by regulatory or legal organizations.  Summitt Energy's contract outlines the terms for the disclosure of information.  Information is retained for the duration of the contract period, as well as for a period of up to 7 years after the termination of the customer's contract and any renewals thereof.

Accuracy

In order to carry-out the terms of the contract between the customer and Summitt Energy, we endeavor to keep customer information accurate, complete and up-to-date.

Safeguards

Summitt Energy protects personal information against loss or theft, as wells as unauthorized access, disclosure, copying, use, or modifications.  This is accomplished through the use of technology and Company practices and procedures.

Electronic customer information is stored on Summitt Energy's servers located in Canada. Servers are kept in a physically-secure area; access to this room is restricted to authorized IT personnel only. Summitt Energy has taken steps to ensure all servers are well protected and placed its systems behind secure firewalls designed to keep information safe and inaccessible. All data are backed up and stored securely at an offsite location. Access to customer information is limited to employees who have a business reason to see it.

 Each employee has a unique login and password to access the customer database.  The type and level of data accessed by employees is pre-determined by the IT Department and Manager of the employee.  The system prompts the user to change their password periodically.

 Openness

By reading the information contained in this document or by contacting Summitt Energy's Customer Service Department information about our Company's personal information policies and practices will be made available to you.

Individual Access

Summitt Energy will make available the information to the individual upon their request.  The customer is asked to contact our Customer Service Department if they have any inquiries at 1-877-222-9250.

Challenging Compliance

An individual shall be able to address a challenge concerning Summitt Energy's compliance with the PIPEDA by contacting our Customer Service Department at 1-877-222-9250.
