The 2011 Ontario electoral race has begun. Each of Ontario’s four major political parties
have announced their proposed energy platform. The Ontario Energy Association composed a neutral account of each party’s platform.

In a stern communiqué from Brussels, the EU complained to the World Trade Organization that the province gives subsidies to renewable energy producers to force the use of Ontario-made goods.
“This is in clear breach of the WTO rules that prohibit linking subsidies to the use of domestic products,” it said in its statement Thursday.
“The European Union leads the world in the promotion and development of renewable energies, and welcomes the commitment of Ontario to encourage their use,” the EU continued.
“However, the promotion of renewable energies must be done in a manner consistent with international trade rules. The EU believes that the Ontario Green Energy and Economy Act … is inconsistent with Canada’s WTO obligations. Under the WTO, it is illegal to condition access to a subsidy to the use of domestic products.”
In June, Japan launched a similar complaint to the WTO about Premier Dalton McGuinty’s signature green energy program.

Stung by constant attacks that he blew it on the $7-billion secret “sweetheart” deal he signed with South Korea’s Samsung Group to generate 2,500 megawatts in green power, Premier Dalton McGuinty has given it another shot.
While McGuinty says the new deal shines brightly for taxpayers, chopping $327 million in potential payments to Samsung, while still generating 16,000 jobs and generating a $7-billion investment in the province in a bid to make Ontario a green jobs hub, it’s not a crystal clear win.
For eight years, billions of your energy dollars have been thrown away through mismanagement and expensive experiments. The result? Skyrocketing rates are making it harder and harder for families to pay their hydro bills and harder and harder for our economy to grow.

Ontario’s much-touted plan to ease the pain of skyrocketing electricity bills has hit roadblocks across the province, forcing hundreds of thousands of customers to wait even longer for help.
Just as new power price increases were announced this week, London Hydro joined the parade of Ontario utilities asking for a delay in bringing in time-of-use pricing that’s supposed to help residents manage those increases.

Smart meters have allowed the province to introduce time-of-use pricing for electricity. The government said smart meters will encourage consumers to reduce consumption and run appliances during periods of lower demand, when power tends to come from cheaper, cleaner sources.
However, critics, such as Hudak, say it’s a tax grab that led to higher energy bills.

Queen’s Park is distributing a six-page pamphlet this week to every household in Ontario as part of a public-relations blitz to tout the new 10 per cent discount on electricity.
