It’s easy to get lost in the numbers when you talk about hydro rates in Ontario. When you factor in kilowatt hours, two-tiered billing, time-of-use pricing, delivery fees and a host of other charges, it seems impossible to figure out how much electricity one actually uses. A cynical person might suggest that was intentional.

Higher prices for electricity in peak daytime hours can’t be ruled out as Ontario moves to reduce rates for late evenings and overnight, says Premier Dalton McGuinty.

“I’m not going to get into that because I’m not the expert,” McGuinty said Wednesday, under pressure from opposition parties asking if his vow to shrink off-peak rates would push other rates up.

Last week, we received the highest energy bill we’ve ever had. It has been a hot summer and we have, admittedly, been running our air conditioner non-stop. (I feel no eco-guilt for this indulgence, given that I am eight months pregnant this August and seem to be operating a good five degrees above the average adult core body temperature.) But that’s not the only reason our energy costs have jumped. Time-of-use billing has gone into effect in our north Toronto neighbourhood.
